Grandad – Ethel went with other members of DLM to the funeral of Mrs Chambers held at St Margaret’s Church in Drayton. Elizabeth started pony riding. Ron took her and Caroline, Caroline had been before.
Mum – Work in am. Eliz went pony riding at Drayton 75p hr. Roy will pay first 10 lessons. FR rang about 4pm.

Mrs Chambers’ Funeral
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DLM refers to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting which was a weekly women’s meeting held at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. Mrs Chambers had attended that meeting although it seems that she may have belonged to the Anglican church given that this is where her funeral was held. She had died on 7 January, see Chapter 116.
St Margaret’s
The parish church in Drayton is St Margaret’s, see Chapter 90.
Liz Starts Pony Riding
Elizabeth/Eliz refers to my younger sister Liz. Ron refers to Ron Douglas who was grandma and grandad’s next-door neighbour at 168 Drayton High Road. Caroline refers to his daughter who was around Liz’s age. They were friends.
Mum notes that the pony riding was in Drayton and that it cost 75p per hour. Roy refers to my dad. Mum noted that he would pay for the first ten lessons. Money was a pretty-much constant source of irritation and conflict between my parents after they split, see Chapter 114.
I had forgotten but Liz took riding quite seriously in the period following this, see Chapter 122.
Mum’s Work
AM refers to morning. Mum went to work in the morning. Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, I assume this was her job as part-time receptionist for Drs Downes and Day, see Chapter 121.
Rev Dowson
FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114.
