Very windy & rain, many trees brought down in parts of the country, our lawns were nearly covered with needles & cones.

According to the Met Office, “on 7 September 1974 a storm resulted in three fatalities and fallen trees across East Anglia and south-east England“. An article in The Courier documented damage caused in Kent and Sussex, particularly to hop gardens.
Grandma and grandad had large lawns at the front and back of their house. These were surrounded by pine trees. So, particularly when it was windy, they were often covered in twigs, cones and needles. These needed to be cleared before the grass could be cut, see Chapter 109.
