Washed & then went to H Canteen. Wet am. E fetched 2 weeks pension £16 per week. President Nixon resigned – Ford took his place.

Notes
Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She usually referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. However, in this entry, she seems to use a mixture of first and third person to describe herself. She is clearly the subject of the first sentence. Yet, E in the third sentence also refers to her, Ethel May Cecilia Parkin.
Grandma usually did washing on a Monday. When grandad was keeping his diary, he almost never mentioned this while grandma often did while she was keeping his diary for him, see Chapter 109.
H Canteen refers to the canteen at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. Grandma helped there as a volunteer, see Chapter 100, having done so since 1968, see Chapter 88.
Grandma and grandad usually collected their pensions from the post office on a weekly basis, see Chapter 104. However, if they missed a week, they could collect two weeks and it was noteworthy when they did so.
Grandad noted when Richard Nixon was re-elected in November 1972 and grandma noted when he resigned following the Watergate scandal although this is not mentioned explicitly in the diaries, see Chapter 112.
