Auntie went to Mrs Davis. Gordon went to Irene’s on his own.

Notes
Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She usually referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. However, in this case, she refers to grandad in the third person, calling him Gordon.
Auntie is a reference to grandma’s maternal aunt, Bertha Seville. At this point, she was 90 and in relatively frail health. She had been staying with grandma and grandad since May, see Chapter 106. Mrs Davis was a friend of grandma’s through the women’s meeting they attended at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 107.
Irene refers to Irene Bell. She lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road. Grandad had been virtually housebound for some time so being able to go to Irene’s by himself was a big achievement.
