E had her hair done. E & A Bertha went to Irene’s to hear Harry Seacombe. Auntie walked to the pillar box.

Notes
Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She usually referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. So, for this entry, E refers to grandma Ethel May Cecilia Parkin.
A Bertha is a reference to grandma’s maternal aunt, Auntie Bertha, Bertha Seville. At this point, she was 90 and in relatively frail health. She had been staying with grandma and grandad since May, see Chapter 106. Irene refers to Irene Bell who lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road. The Bells had relatively new stereo equipment and various family members went there from time to time to listen to records, see Chapter 111.
As mentioned, Auntie Bertha was relatively frail so it was an achievement for her to be able to walk to the post/pillar box, see Chapter 110.
