Wednesday 31 July 1974

Auntie went to 162 to hear MA’s record. A & E came for dinner & tea.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person.

Auntie refers to grandma’s maternal aunt Bertha Seville who was staying with them at this point, see Chapter 106. She was 90 and relatively frail. The reference to 162 is to 162 Drayton High Road which was next-door-but-one to where grandma and grandad lived. Ken and Irene Bell lived here. Initially, I thought the entry read “MA & record” and I had not idea what “MA” referred to. However, in March 1972, grandad went to the Bells to try to record a record by M Anderson which may refer to the American singer  Marian Anderson, see Chapter 111. So, I wonder if the entry actually says “MA’s record“.

A and E refer to my brother and sister, Alan and Liz (Elizabeth). They had also been at grandma and grandad’s the previous day.
