Tuesday 16 July 1974

E went to Hairdressers. Rev H came to tell us about Dorothy (Hodgson). E went to see them in aft. Rose came & stayed until E came back.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. So, E refers to grandma, Ethel May Cecilia Parkin, in this entry.

Rev H refers to Rev Hayman who was the Methodist Minister at the time, see Chapter 107. He came to tell them that Dorothy Hodgson (Berry) had died. She was the married daughter of Mr and Mrs Hodgson who were friends of grandma and grandad. I believe she lived in the United States and was 50 when she died, see Chapter 100. Grandma went to see the Hosgsons when she heard the news.

Rose refers to Rose Elsegood, grandma’s friend. She came because both grandad and Auntie Bertha were in poor health, see Chapter 100. Auntie Bertha, Bertha Seville, was staying with grandma and grandad at this time, see Chapter 106.
