Sunday 23 June 1974

Sheila P&E came. The boys watched football. Amy rang. Tom was very ill on Thurs. Back to squar one.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person.

It was our usual practice to go to grandma’s for tea on Sunday afternoon, see Chapter 106. On this occasion, only my mother and two sisters went. So, Sheila refers to my mother Sheila May Drew née Parkin and P and E refer to my sisters Patricia (Tricia) and Elizabeth (Liz) respectively.

The boys” refers to me and my brother Alan. This was probably the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. On the 23rd, the BBC showed the Netherlands Bulgaria game which the Netherlands won 4-1 to win their group. ITV showed Sweden Uruguay which Sweden won 3-0 to finish second in the group. These were the final group games of Group 3.

Tom and Amy refers to grandma and grandad’s friend Tom and Amy Wilson. Tom had been unwell in 1971, and it seems this may have been a recurrence of that illness, see Chapter 100. Later that year, in September, Amy would visit grandma and grandad on her own as Tom was not well enough to come.
