Ethel had a B&B at the meeting £4.29. Rev H came. I turned queer about 9 o’clock. E got me to bed.

Notes
Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. So, both Ethel and E in this context refer to grandma, Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. “I” and “me” refer to grandad. The reference to “turning queer” means I think that grandad’s health took a turn for the worse.
“The meeting” is a reference to a women’s meeting that grandma attended at Drayton Methodist Church. I believe “B&B” is a reference to a bring and buy sale and “£4.29” refers to the amount raised. It is not clear if the money raised was for their own funds or charity, as they sometimes raised funds for particular charities, see Chapter 107.
Rev H refers to Rev Hayman who was Methodist Minister at Mile Cross from around 1968 to 1979, see Chapter 107. I believe his first name was Michael.
