Thursday 30 May 1974

E & Dolly went to DM. Ron took me & E to vote. County Council. Bell got in.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person using E in this case. So, E in this entry refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. “Me” refers to my grandfather Charles Gordon Parkin.

Dolly refers to my Auntie Dolly whose full name was Dorothy Rose. She was not my aunt but was grandad’s first cousin, so my first cousin twice removed. She lived in Bedford but visited grandma and grandad often, see Chapter 106. Auntie Dolly was staying with grandma and grandad at this time having arrived a few days earlier.

DM stands for Drayton Methodist and refers to a women’s meeting that grandma attended at Drayton Methodist Church on a Thursday afternoon. Grandad always referred to this as DLM for Drayton Ladies’ Meeting, see Chapter 107.

Ron refers to Ron Douglas who was grandma and grandad’s next-door neighbour living at 168 Drayton High Road. They were voting in local, County Council elections, see Chapter 112.
