E washed. Good drying day. I was pretty fair. E gardened & had a bonfire. Paid Tel bill.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. However, she used grandad’s voice so “I” refers to grandad and E to herself. She highlights things that grandad rarely noted, e.g. that she did washing and that it was a “good drying day“, see Chapter 109. On this day, grandad’s condition was “pretty fair“.

As noted, E refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She was active in the garden and, like grandad, tended to get rid of garden refuse by burning it, see Chapter 109. She paid the telephone bill. They had only had a telephone installed the previous year, see Chapter 111.
