Ray & I went to Theatre Nottm saw “The Beggar Opera”.

Notes

I am not entirely sure if the reference here is to Ray or Roy. While my father was called Roy (Royle), this was well before he or my mother were born! Similarly, grandad’s nephew was called Roy (Evans) but he was only born in 1921 so would have been three at this time. Perhaps this was too young for the opera!!

On balance, I think that grandad is referring to grandma’s brother, Ray Cirket. This is a few months before she is first mentioned in his diaries (December 1924 – see Chapter 16) but perhaps grandad knew her brother first. In 1922, grandad mentions going to Wisbech, 7 Mile House and Linby with Ray. Also, earlier in 1924 he went to Nottingham with Ray.

Nottm refers to Nottingham. They saw “The Beggar’s Opera” by John Gay at the Theatre Royal. According to an article in the Nottingham Journal, the opera had opened the previous night and this was the third time it had been performed in Nottingham. The role of Polly was played by Pamela Baselow and Macheath by Leonard Underwood.
