Saturday 30 March 1974

Ethel went to Chapel Anniversary at Taverham. E & I did a bit in the garden. We pruned the roses. Ethel cut some of the front lawn, I raked the back & had a fire. E & I saw the Grand National race.

Notes

E and Ethel both refer to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. For details of events grandma attended at Taverham Methodist Chapel in the early seventies, see Chapter 107. Apparently, there was a Methodist Church in Taverham but this has now closed, see Chapter 79.

Grandma and grandad had large gardens at the front and back of their house. Both had large lawns and were surrounded by pine trees. The grass needed cutting regularly and, before this could be done, the lawns had to be raked to get rid of cones, needles and small twigs. Grandad’s preferred way of getting rid of this garden refuse was to burn it! Grandma and grandad also had a number of ornamental flower beds, including, in particular roses. As a child, I was not a fan of these as I had a number of punctured footballs from then! For more details of grandma and grandad’s gardens and gardening in the early seventies see Chapter 109.

Neither grandma nor grandad were big horse racing fans but they did sometimes watch the Grand National. This year, grandad did not note any details but it was the second of Red Rum’s three National wins, see Chapter 112.
