Notes
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DMC refers to Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 107.
Sheila refers to my mother Sheila May Drew nee Parkin. It was our practice to go to grandma and grandad’s for tea on Sunday afternoon, see Chapter 106.
Eliz refers to my sister Liz (Elizabeth) Tidy nee Drew. She was learning to play the flute at school, see Chapter 103. I am not sure why she brought the flute to grandad.
The air crash grandad referred to was of Turkish Airlines Flight 981 which was a scheduled flight from Istanbul to Heathrow. According to Wikipedia, there appear to have been 343 passengers on board. Of these, 117 had come from Istanbul while a further 216 boarded in Paris. However, the death toll cited of 346 would suggest the number of passengers was closer to 335. All on board were killed. Of the passengers, 250 were British with 18 from Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club. The crash was said to have been caused by an incorrectly-secured cargo door. The crash occurred in the Ermenonville Forest near Paris.
