The man in the next bed Mr Ward went home, he was good company I missed him. While in hospital Sheila brought at different days Patricia, Roger, Alan & Elizabeth. Cannot remember which days. Ken & Irene & Lynda Bell visited me, also Barbara. Ethel & Sheila visited me every visiting time. Ethel’s feet were very bad but she came all the same. Rev Hayman also called. Mrs Hayman was working in Ward 7 she had a chat with me several times. Irene & E came to see me also Dr Leeming of Drayton. Mrs Hayman came to see me.

Notes

Grandad was in hospital at this time and his diary notes are a little difficult to follow. In addition to the main entries, there are other entries on a piece of card which has been stapled to the previous page. Those entries are labelled by day but not by date. I have tried to match them. For details of grandad’s illness, see Chapter 100.

Sheila refers to my mother Sheila May Drew nee Parkin. Patricia, Roger, Alan & Elizabeth refers to me and my three siblings.

Ken, Irene and Lynda (Linda) Bell lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road. Barbara Carpenter was grandma and grandad’s next-door neighbour at 164 Drayton High Road.

Ethel and E both refer to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. As grandad noted, grandma was suffering with painful feet at this time.

Dr Leeming was one of the GPs in Drayton. Rev Hayman was the Methodist Minister. It seems his wife worked at the hospital.
