Irene refers to Irene Bell. She lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road. For details of Irene’s birthdays, see Chapter 106. However, I think he may have got her age wrong as he also noted she was 49 in 1972!
Grandma and grandad had large gardens at the back and front of their house. Grandad’s preferred way of disposing of garden waste was to burn it, see Chapter 109.
