Friday 27 April 1973

Dolly went home Barbara’s mother went with her to Bedford, she left Dolly at Bedford & went on to Bristol. Roy called for them at 07.00. In the afternoon Ethel went to Norwich returned the chimes to Willson’s he returned the money, he is going to try & get me a glockenspiel.

Notes

Dolly refers to my grandmother’s first cousin, Dorothy Rose, who lived in Bedford and who often visited grandma and grandad, see Chapter 106.

Barbara refers to Barbara Carpenter who was grandma and grandad’s next-door neighbour. I think her mother was referred to in the diaries as Mrs Smith.

Roy refers to my father Royle Drew.

Ethel refers to my grandmother, Ethel May Cecilia Parkin.

I am not entirely sure which music shop grandad was referring to as Wilson’s as there were two in Norwich at this time – W E Willson and Willson and Ramshaw (see Chapter 108). Both advertised in the Hewett School magazine in 1972 (see Chapter 103). Details of these chime bars, which grandad bought two days earlier, are also in Chapter 108.

Adverts for Willson and Ramshaw (above) and W E Willson’s (below) that appeared in the Hewett School magazine in 1972
