I made the gas metre cover higher, because the gas board had put a gajat on top. Notes The modification made by the gas board to the meter relates to the conversion from town to natural gas (see Chapter 102). I assume that “gajat” means gadget.

Tuesday 20 February 1973
I raked the front lawn. Notes Grandma and grandad had lawns in both their front and back gardens. They were surrounded by pine trees so they spent a lot of time clearing needles and cones from the lawns (see Chapter 109 for example).

At 08.50 man came to connect the telephone left 11.00. Ethel went on 11.45 bus to Norwich. Notes Although grandma and grandad had lived in their house since 1964, they only had a telephone connected in 1973 (see Chapter 111).
