Put Annie a shelf up.

Notes

One of the challenges with our family’s diaries is that they often refer to people by first name only and, in some cases, there are multiple people by the same name. In these cases it is only possible to distinguish who is who based on context.

Grandad knew a number of Annies!

First, Annie Marie Higham married grandad’s older brother James Henry Parkin in 1906, see Chapter 1. However, they had emigrated to Canada by the end of 1925 so this was not her.

In my opinion, it is much more likely that it refers to Annie Holmes who, with her husband Tom, were very close friends of grandma’s parents, Charles and Jane Cirket. Indeed, in 1932, Tom and Annie and grandma’s mother and father moved into neighbouring houses, see Chapter 24. Tom and Annie had married in 1925 so it seems reasonable that grandad was helping the newly-wed Annie with some odd DIY jobs. On this occasion, grandad put up a shelf for her.

This photo is from the early 1930s. It shows (from left to right) Annie, grandma, Tom and mum. I am not sure who the woman in the deck chair in the foreground was
