Ethel drove round Linby and Papplewick.

Ethel refers to my grandmother, Ethel Cirket. Grandma and grandad were “courting” at this time and would marry in 1930, see Chapter 16.
Linby and Papplewick are villages in Nottinghamshire just to the north and north east of Hucknall respectively. The round trip from Kirkby through these villages and back is around 14-15 miles.
It seems that grandad may have been teaching grandma to drive. I am not sure if this related to a motorbike or car. Grandad had a motorbike at this time but also had access to a car through family members, see Chapter 18. I suspect the latter is more likely.
I don’t think grandma drove much after that. In April 1955, both mum and grandma applied for provisional driving licences. Grandma was able to apply for a full licence without taking a test as she had held a licence in 1926 apparently, see Chapter 63. This was before the introduction of mandatory driving tests in 1934.
