Notes

Hair Set

Mum had her hair set in the morning (am).

Work for Rev Eddy

GTE refers to Rev G T Eddy who was the Chairman of the Methodist District. Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum did some part-time secretarial work for him between 1973 and 1977, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she went there after having had her hair done.

Lunch at Woolworths

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She met mum in Norwich and they had lunch at Woolworths, see Chapter 122. Woolworths was a large and well-known retail chain that was established in the UK in 1909. However, the group went into administration in 2009 and was dissolved in 2015. I recall Woolworths being at 21-25 Rampant Horse Street. At that time, it was next to Marks and Spencer although M&S bought the store from Woolworths in the eighties and it is all M&S now.

Navy and White Skirt from Marks and Spencer

Mum noted that she bought a blue and white skirt from Marks and Spencer (Marks & S) for £4.99, see Chapter 125. Marks and Spencer remain a large and well-known chain of department stores including one on Rampant Horse Street in Norwich. The business was established in 1884 by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in Leeds. The Norwich store on the corner of Rampant Horse Street and St Stephens has been there for as long as I can remember

Decorating the Lounge

Mum had decided to decorate our lounge, see Chapter 126, which was the downstairs room at the front of the house. Tricia (P for Patricia) had already put one coat of paint on the ceiling and she put another.

Mum Remained Unwell

Mum had had a cold and cough, see Chapter 116. She noted that she did not have the energy to help Tricia paint the ceiling although she had had the energy to go shopping and out for lunch!

Bert Adcock

Mum saw Bert Adcock at night. Initially, I was not sure who this was or why mum went to see him. She also did something similar later in April but these appear to be the only two times he was mentioned in the diaries. I am grateful to Barry Ferguson for explaining to me that he was the caretaker at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124 and he lived close to the church.

Choir Practice

Mum was part of the choir at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. She went for a practice at night.

China Cabinet

Mum bought a china cabinet in September 1956, see Chapter 70, and I recall this from my childhood. Mum gave us this china cabinet which is now in our living room. On this occasion, a shelf fell and a few things were broken.

We now have this china cabinet in our living room

Senokot

Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

Hangman

At school, see Chapter 118, it was the last day of term and we broke up at lunch-time. In the morning, we played “hangman” in social economics. I am not sure if this was sanctioned by the teacher or if we did it perhaps because they were not there.

Group Practice

While I was at school, I was part of a music group and was trying to learn guitar, see Chapter 118. However, I was never very good and was always on the edges of the group! On this occasion, I noted that there was a group practice after we broke up.

Gary Wood

I went to Gary Wood’s for dinner. I am not sure if this was before the group practice, see Chapter 118, and we went to get his amplifier or if it was afterwards and we were taking his amplifier home.

Packing

I noted packing as we were leaving the next day to go camping in France with school, see Chapter 118.
