Monday 26 January 1976

Snow. Thawed a bit then lot more came but thawing later. Took R to dentist, then took Ken Elworthy to station – he’s going on a 12 day course to Lyndors. Then to see Fred Elson at Earlham School re Alan’s ‘O’ levels. Long talk – satisfactory I think. Then to hospital for notes. Typ & dup in aft. Church Fam Com at night – felt like resigning but didn’t because want to be on Council & Cir Mtg. 1T 1S.

Notes

Weather

Mum noted that it snowed and then thawed a bit. However, more snow then came which, later, started to thaw also.

Dentist

R refers to me (Roger). Mum took me to see the dentist. At that time, David Rogers was our dentist, see Chapter 116, so assume that is who I went to see.

Ken Elworthy

At that time, Ken Elworthy was the junior Minister at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Mum gave him a lift to the station. From there, he was going to the Methodist Guild hotel Lindors in the Wye Valley. Mum, Alan and Liz went there on holiday the following year in 1977, see Chapter 122. On this occasion, Rev Elworthy was going on a 12-day course there although mum did not say what the course was about.

Fred Elson

Mum then went to see Fred Elson who I believe was the Head at Earlham School, where my younger brother Alan attended, see Chapter 118. Mum wanted to discuss Alan’s O levels with him which she did, at length. She thought that the conversation had been satisfactory but she did not specify what they discussed.

Notes from the Hospital

Mum then collected notes from the hospital. I assume this related to her work for the private practice of Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121, although she was not actually working for them until the next day.

Typing and Duplicating

According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975, see Chapter 121. However, she clearly continued doing typing and duplicating after that, possibly mainly for church. On this occasion, she noted that she typed (typ) and duplicated (dup) in the afternoon (aft).

Church Family Committee

Mum attended a meeting of St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church Family (Fam) Committee (Com) at night, see Chapter 124. She noted that she felt like resigning although she did not say why. She did note that she did not resign because she wanted to be on the (Church) Council and Circuit (Cir) Meeting (Mtg). I assume this means that she was on these bodies by virtue of her position on the Church Family Committee but it could mean that she saw the latter as a stepping stone to the former.

Antidepressants

Mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She was on antidepressants. On this occasion, she took one tablet of amitryptilline (Tryptizol, T).

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
