Notes

Morning Service at Drayton Methodist Church (DMC)

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. In the morning, she went to the service at Drayton Methodist Church (DMC), see Chapter 124. Usually, she went twice in the morning and afternoon. However, there were no afternoon services in August.

Sunday Afternoon Tea

Grandad noted that we went as a family to theirs for tea as was our usual practice, see Chapter 122. Mum also noted that we went to Drayton for tea.

Comments on Weather

Both grandad and mum commented on the weather noting that it was very hot all day.

Evening Service at Mile Cross Methodist Church (MCMC)

As noted above, Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. In the evening, she went to the service at Mile Cross Methodist Church (MCMC), see Chapter 124. Grandad noted that Mr Newsome gave her a lift. I think he was soemone they knew through church. He sometimes gave her lifts and he also gave grandad some catheter leg bags, see Chapter 116.

St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church

St P’s refers to St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. Mum noted that there were “moans & groans again” but she does not specify who was complaining about what! Mum herself was not very happy with the church, in general, and the senior Minister, Mr Ream, in particular. She had noted the previous week that the morning service had been “terrible“. It may be that people knew of her discontent and they felt able to grumble to her about the church!

Letter to Leslie Dye

In the afternoon (aft), mum delivered a letter to Leslie Dye. I assume this was the letter she had written the previous Sunday but not delivered. There, she noted that it was about the church and the senior Minister, see Chapter 124. I believe Leslie Dye was a member of St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church but I am not sure why she wrote to him specifically. I assume he was the holder of a relevant office, perhaps senior steward. To be honest, I don’t know the content of that letter but I expect it was pretty critical of the church and of Rev Ream in particular.
