Notes
Grandma Volunteered at the Norfolk and Norwich Canteen
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. During this period, grandma continued to volunteer at the canteen at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, see Chapter 116.
Mum had Alan’s Pen and Biro Engraved
Alan refers to my younger brother. He had had his 13th birthday the previous day on June 13, see Chapter 122. I assume mum had got him a pen and biro for his birthday although she did not mention it that day.
She got his pen and biro engraved, presumably with his name. This cost £3 which it seems she thought was expensive as it merited an exclamation mark. She had this done at Jarrolds, see Chapter 125.
Pastoral Sub-Committee
Mum went to a pastoral sub-committee meeting at night, presumably at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. I confess I don’t know exactly what such a committee was or did. However, such a committee was seen as part of the oversight of the church with a specific responsibility for pastoral care, that is the common concern shared by the whole Christian community for the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of other people.
Dad Came to Norwich
Roy refers to my father Royle Drew. He came to Norwich for a meeting at the Norwich Union, see Chapter 114. He arrived at 9.45 and I presume this was pm. Mum does not specify where he was staying but I assume it was not with us, so presumably at a hotel.
