Grandad Commented on the Weather

Grandad noted that it was very cold and there had been slight snow.

The Boat Race

The university boat race between Oxford and Cambridge took place on Easter Saturday this year, see Chapter 123. Grandad watched it at home on their TV. Grandma (Ethel), however, went next door to Barbara Carpenter’s at 164 Drayton High Road, and watched it there. At this time, grandma and grandad still had a black and white TV while Barbara had got a colour television in October 1972. We only got our first colour TV in March 1976 and grandma only got one in April 1977 after grandad had died, see Chapter 128.

Mum Was in Eastbourne

Mum spent this Easter in Eastbourne where she stayed in a single room at the Methodist Guild property, the Links, see Chapter 122. I was away on a school camping trip in France, see Chapter 118 and my siblings were staying with dad in London.

In the morning (a.m.), mum went round the shops with someone called Gladys Temple who is only mentioned this once in mum’s diaries. Then, in the afternoon (aft), mum went on a coach trip to Rye, a round trip of some 60 miles. In the evening, there was a social and mum won first prize in an Easter bonnet competition.
