In the afternoon Ethel went to a meeting at Princess St Chapel. We gathered apples in the A.M.
Notes
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. Despite his spelling, I believe grandad is referring to the Congregational/United Reformed Chapel in Princes Street, Grandma went there quite often for women’s meetings in the early seventies, see Chapter 107. This was built in the 19th century and, in 1972, became a United Reformed Church. A decision was taken to close it in 2020 and it was for sale in April 2021 with the expectation that it would be converted for residential use. However, in September 2023, a proposal was submitted to convert it to a live music venue.
As far as I recall, grandma and grandad did not have apple trees in their garden. However, their neighbour, Ron Douglas, did at 168 Drayton High Road. I suspect they picked apples from his trees.
