Tuesday 27 August 1974

E went to 85 & helped Daphney clear out. Dolly finished my green dress.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. So, the entry on this day was the last of grandma’s entries. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She usually referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. So, in this case, E refers to grandma Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. However, it also seems likely that the reference to “my green dress” was to her green dress and not grandad’s!!

85 refers to 85 Drayton High Road where grandma’s friend Mrs Davis lived. She had had a fall on 14 August 1974 and was in the process of moving to Eckling Grange, a care home in Dereham, see Chapter 100. Grandma was helping her with her move. I am not entirely sure who Daphney was. I don’t believe this was Mrs Davis’ first name but it could have been a sister or another friend.

Dolly refers to grandma’s paternal cousin, Dorothy Rose, who we knew as Auntie Dolly. She lived in Bedford but visited grandma and grandad several times per year always coming to Norwich by bus, see Chapter 106. She had arrived around two weeks earlier. I think Auntie Dolly may have been particularly good at sewing as she finished a green dress for grandma, who was also able to sew, see Chapter 109.
