Thursday 11 July 1974

E went to her meeting. Arthur, Mrs Cooper & Irene came for coffee. Mrs Inchley brought 2lbs straws.

Notes

Grandad was unwell at this time having had a stroke in early April, see Chapter 100. Based on handwriting, I think grandma mainly kept his diary for him between 24 April and 27 August. Mostly, she used grandad’s voice. She referred to herself in the third person and grandad in the first person. So, here E refers to grandma, that is Ethel May Cecilia Parkin.

The meeting referred to was a weekly women’s meeting held at Drayton Methodist Church on a Thursday afternoon, see Chapter 107.

Arthur refers to grandad’s friend Arthur Elsegood. Mrs Cooper refers to a friend of grandma’s from the women’s meeting at church. Irene refers to Irene Bell who lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road.

I am not entirely sure of the final name here. It could be Inchley or Inckley. Her only appearance in the diaries was here and I am not sure who she was. Straws refers to strawberries. I am not sure why she was bringing these to grandma and grandad. Perhaps she grew them or had done pick your own? I am also not entirely sure of the quantity as something appears to have been crossed out before the figure 2.
