Ethel went into Barbaras, Mrs Smith B mother was there, Mrs S & Ethel watched the wedding of Princess Anne & Captain Mark Phyllips on coloured TV. I started doing the roto mower, put wheels in place of rollers.

Ethel refers to my grandmother, Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. Barbara/B refers to Barbara Carpenter, grandma and grandad’s next-door neighbour who lived at 164 Drayton High Road. Mrs S refers to Mrs Smith, Barbara’s mother.

For more detail of grandma and grandad’s first experiences of colour TV, see Chapter 111. Grandad’s first experience of colour TV had come more than one year earlier, in October 2022, when he had watched an episode of “Dixon of Dock Green” at Barbara’s.

The Roto mower was a Qualcast rotary mower that grandad got from Curls/Debenhams in June 1973, see Chapter 108. For more details of this including its use, see Chapter 109. On this occasion, grandad was adding wheels in place of rollers.
