King Barber
Currently, King Barber is located at 58 Station Street. They have been located there from at least March 2022.
Food Outlets
Before that, the premises housed a number of food outlets including Big Belly Deli (2020-21), Rob’s Rolls (2017-19), Kings Rolls (2015-16) and Yummy’s (2008-11). In a Facebook comment, Jean Harvey noted that her friends, Mr and Mrs Elson, had bought the shop from Mr Wilbourn and opened Yummy’s.
Krackers
In the 1980s, Krackers discount store was at number 58. Krackers appear to have been a discount chain. However, I have not found much information about them although there are posts related to specific Krackers stores in particular locations, e.g. Livingstone.
In 2001, Krackers were located at what is now 51B Station Street where Best Wishes are now. In a comment on Annesley OC Heritage Extra Facebook Page, Matt Wright recalled that his father had worked at Krackers while he had been growing up, “they did markets and then had shops in Retford, Kirkby, Heanor and Bulwell as far as I can remember but I’m sure they had more. Sold general nic nacs, bedding, cards, toys, household stuff etc. I always remember going to work with him in the summer.” Conversely, Nic Machin commented that they could not remember what the shop sold but loved the name.
Sue Marriott worked for Krackers for 15 years. She noted that it “was part of Newcombe’s. Worked at both Crackers. 1st shop was too small so they had the 1 in photos.”
Wilbourn’s
Previously, 58 Station Street was part of the premises occupied by Wilbourn’s who we have covered in detail in relation to 60 Station Street. In a Facebook comment, Chris Spencer noted specifically that this part of Wilbourns was a delicatessen. He noted, “my uncle bought food in there cheese, olives, German sausage etc.”
Residents of 58 Station Street
The Waltons
In 1939, Ernest R and Carrie Watson were recorded as living at 58-60 Station Street with their two sons Edward (b1920) and Eric (b1921). There is also one closed record and I wonder if this refers to John Walton. Ernest was the manager of a grocers, wine and spirits. Edward and Eric were both articled clerks to chartered accountants.
They were also listed in the 1921 census as living at 58 Station Street. Ernest’s middle name is given as Reuben and there is confirmation that he was working for E Wilbourn (transcribed Wilbourne) in Station Street.
The Wilbourns
In 1911, Edward and Sarah Anne Wilbourn were living at 58-60 Station Street with their daughter Carrie (b1895). Edward was listed as a grocer and provision dealer. Both Sarah Anne and Carrie assisted in the business.
Edward and Sarah Anne were listed as living at 58 and 60 Station Street in 1901 but their name has been transcribed as Welbourn. Living with them was Ruth H Whittaker, a general nurse. Perhaps surprisingly, six-year old Carrie was not listed there. She was with her grandmother, Emma Wilbourn, at 44 Sherwood Street. Emma was described as a widowed ironmonger. I presume that Sarah Anne was sick and Carrie had gone to stay with her grandmother.
