Went to the Empire (Nottm).

Notes

Nottm refers to Nottingham.

The Empire was a cinema in Nottingham. Adjacent to the Theatre Royal, this variety theatre was opened in 1898. Bioscope films were screened. It closed in 1958 and was demolished in 1969 and the Theatre Royal extended, see Chapter 21 and Index of Cinemas.

Grandad did not record what he went to see but the South Notts Echo of 21 April 1923 noted that there was a variety show including P T Selbit and The Living Pincushion, G S Melvin, Arnaut Brothers, Brothers Loret, Poley and Partner, Bobby “Uke” Henshaw and George French.
